Case Study: From Purpose-Driven Investment to Preparing for a Sunset

Jul 22, 2026

How Caprock and Gary Community Ventures approached a decade of mission-aligned investing

In 2016, Gary Community Ventures made an ambitious commitment to put its entire balance sheet to work in service of Colorado kids and families. Over the decade that followed, Caprock worked alongside Gary to build a fully mission-aligned portfolio that combined institutional investment discipline with measurable social impact.

The partnership extended across asset classes, private markets and place-based investments, while helping Gary integrate its portfolio more closely with its grantmaking, policy advocacy and venture-building work. Together, the organizations demonstrated that foundations can pursue competitive returns while using every dollar they hold to advance their mission.

As Gary prepares for its planned 2035 sunset, it is bringing investment management in-house to connect its capital even more directly with its programs, community relationships and eventual transfer of assets. The transition reflects the capabilities Gary has built and the success of a partnership designed to support its continued evolution.

In a joint reflection, Gary and Caprock look back on what they built together, what the experience helped prove and what it may offer the broader impact-investing field.
